Causes of Umbilical Hernia

Pregnant belly button pop out is common, but having umbilical hernia can be disturbing a lot. Yes, it is common in babies, but it can also happen to the mothers. This happens to the pregnant ladies when too much pressure is posed to the weak sections of abdominal muscles. Potential causes of an umbilical hernia in mothers are-

  • Excess fluid in the abdominal cavity
  • Frequent pregnancies
  • Having a heavy and continuous cough
  • Having twins or triplets
  • Abdominal surgery

Symptoms of Umbilical Hernia

As most cases are painless, you may not notice it in your baby. But, if you notice any bulging around the umbilical area that is something you should consult with doctors.

The common symptoms of an umbilical hernia in babies are-

  • If your baby suddenly starts vomiting
  • There is a bulge in the umbilical area which is tender, discolored and swollen
  • If he/she is crying in pain

In case of adults, often umbilical hernia can be painful and create immense discomfort. Surgery is the only way to get rid of this.

Are There Any Other Complications?

Usually, additional complications are very rare in case of children, but if the umbilical cord is incarcerated, certain complications can be there. Often intestine can’t be pushed back to the abdominal wall can’t get enough blood supply. This can kill tissue and cause immense pain. A strangulated umbilical hernia is another common complication.
