5 Common Drinking Water Problems and Solutions

Water is one of the basic needs for every human. Every person needs to drink at least 2-3 litres of safe and clean water on a daily basis. Contaminated water is not only dirty but also deadly. Around 1.8 million people die annually due to waterborne diseases, which are easily preventable.

It’s not an easy task to get rid of all the impurities from contaminated water unless you have a good water purifier at home or highly efficient commercial RO system at business establishments. Here are a few of the common drinking water problems that you may face and their appropriate solutions.

High TDS

TDS refers to the total dissolved solvents in water and it is a count of dissolved natural salts and impurities in water. If you regularly consume water with more than 500 TDS, then excess salts get into your body. This can cause many health problems like gall stones, kidney stones, joint stiffness and hardening of the arteries. If the salts are high in dangerous chemicals like arsenic and lead, it can also lead to fatal diseases. Using an RO purifier for homes and commercial RO system for public places with high footfall is the right solution to get rid of high TDS in water.

Biological Contaminants

Bacteria, virus and other microbes can enter the water at multiple points and these are the root cause of all waterborne diseases. The risks of these diseases increase multifold during the rainy season. The health issues caused due to legionella, E. coli, cryptosporidium etc. are well-documented. Using a UV filter is an ideal way to get rid of these biological contaminants. The UV light destroys the DNA of these micro-organisms and makes them inactive.

Weird Taste and Odour

The main sources of odour and taste problems in drinking water are bacteria and algae. If the water has high levels of chloramines and other chemicals, then too it leads to a weird taste and odour. The best ways to treat such water are carbon filtration and reverse osmosis purification. You can choose a suitable purifier depending on the kind of contamination and the associated quality of water.

Particulate Present in Water

The suspended solids in the water could be due to either sediments or turbidity levels. These particulates can, at times, include other harmful organic, inorganic and microbiological contaminants too. The sediments can have detrimental effects on equipment and reduce the effectiveness of UV filters. The turbidity present can deter the UV radiation from reaching the microbes by shielding them. The best way to get rid of it is by mechanical filtration or by using a water purifier having a sediment filter inbuilt in it.

These are few of the common problems with drinking water. The simplest way to resolve these problems is to install a proper water purifier. You can choose one from the many available in the market depending upon the water quality reaching the taps at your home.
